Skip Counting/Sets
Multiplication & the Distributive Property
Service Description
Using clear organza bags and colored plastic cubes, learners can visually learn to count in sets. This forms an important foundation for multiplication. It also allows learners to count by one (through the bags) if they don't have the result committed to memory yet. This set can also be used to practice skip counting, for learners who are just getting started with multiplication. Learners can come to see the bags like parenthesis, where you cannot separate items within the bag without some operation (distribution <> taking them out of the bag). Leaders can draw equations and have learners model the equation with bags and blocks or they can invert the process and present a set of bags and blocks and ask learners to write the equation.
